The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love is a delightful lesbian film from 1995. An era when a number of indie lesbian classics such as But I’m a Cheerleader and Bound were released. Films that would receive a lot of pushback today, despite it being 2025. This is in part because the notion of progress and “things getting better” as a result of legislation, activism, and representation, is a fallacy designed to keep us wrapped up in the patriarchal-colonial system.

TITAo2GiL is just a love story, with some comedy, and full of great performances. What homophobia there is is manageable, and you never fear for anyone’s safety. It’s a wonderfully safe film to watch, especially in this era of increased scrutiny and hatred directed toward LGBTQ2SIA+ people and identities. A movie that unapologetically depicts a multiracial lesbian love story, and isn’t full of angst, is just a winner.
I’ve watched this film twice, the first was at an online lesbian movie watching event, then again a few weeks ago.
One of the moments that sticks out clearly in my mind is when the girls are discovered by one of their mothers, and they run. But the music isn’t tense, it’s a little goofy and you get the sense everyone’s gonna be okay.
The cast is great. The two leads are played by Laurel Holloman (who would later appear as Tina in The L Word) and Nicole Ari Parker who most recently appeared in weird Sex in the City spin-off And Just Like That.
The director Maria Meggenti is herself a force to be reckoned with. While as a director this film was her biggest success, she was also a member of ACT UP. She wrote a number of their educational materials, and was a member of the ACT UP Oral History Project.
For something lite, full of 90s vibes, and super gay – give The The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love a shot. You won’t regret it.
